Amanda Milam
About
I am Of Counsel to Milam & Fanning, where I strive to bring a strategic, business-minded approach to legal counsel, which is shaped by my role advising leadership on high-impact institutional decisions. I currently serve as Associate General Counsel for the Texas State Technical College System, advising executive leadership on governance, workforce and employment matters, regulatory strategy, complex transactions, and enterprise risk. In this role, I operate not just as legal counsel but as a key partner in shaping organizational direction and aligning legal frameworks with long-term institutional goals. Prior to joining TSTC, I served children in the CPS system as their Attorney and Guardian ad Litem, represented the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in child-protection litigation, and served as an Assistant District Attorney prosecuting misdemeanors and felonies.
My practice is shaped by a simple reality: uncertainty creates real harm—whether in the child welfare system or within business organizations. I focus on bringing clarity to those facing complex, high-stakes situations so decisions can be made with confidence. My background spans litigation, public service, and child welfare advocacy, giving me a unique, multidimensional perspective on risk, accountability, and decision-making. I have represented state agencies in court, advised on policy and operational strategy, and continue to serve as an attorney ad litem for children, which underscores my commitment to meaningful advocacy.
I take a common-sense approach to the law while using analytical judgment to help clients move beyond reactive legal thinking toward proactive, strategic solutions. I prioritize identifying risk early, structuring decisions intentionally, and enabling organizations to move forward with confidence.
I am beyond blessed to be married to Jason Milam, the firm’s phenomenal Managing Partner. Together, we are raising two daughters, Evelyn and Joyce, and are co-CEOs of an organization (i.e., household) that doesn't slow down. Outside the office, I am an amateur art collector, seeking out works that carry atmosphere, tension, or a sense of whimsy, and I look for perspectives that question assumptions rather than accept them. Likewise, I gravitate toward experiences that match my professional zeal—whether that means tackling challenging hiking trails, getting lost in a compelling book, or planning family adventures that range from carefully organized to just shy of chaotic. I particularly appreciate the kind of moments that require adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
